Capacity, Flexibility, and Data – Three Words Defining the Future Utility

Energinet’s connection freeze in the spring of 2026 highlighted something many in the industry had already begun to experience: capacity constraints in the Danish power system are no longer a future challenge, they are here today. A connection queue of 60 GW against a national peak demand of just 7 GW illustrates a structural imbalance that cannot be solved through a single measure. It requires coordination at the transmission level, sound political priorities, and a distribution network that is prepared to play an active role in the overall energy system. This is where the discussion becomes particularly relevant for Distribution System Operators (DSOs).

From Passive Wires to Active System Participants

Historically, distribution system operators (DSOs) have had a relatively well-defined role: delivering electricity reliably from the transmission grid to end users. That role is now changing.

With the rapid growth of distributed generation, electric vehicles, heat pumps, and industrial electrification, the distribution grid is no longer just a delivery network. It has become a system that must manage double-digit gigawatt fluctuations, new consumption and generation patterns, and increasing demands to contribute to overall system flexibility.

This places new demands on what DSOs know about their networks—and when they know it.

Smart Meter Data, Substation Monitoring, and Advanced Analytics

One of the most underutilized resources in today’s utility sector is the wealth of data that already exists: measurement data from smart meter (AMI/AMS) installations, operational data from substations, and event logs from the grid.

When used systematically, this data can provide a living picture of the grid’s actual condition—not based on worst-case assumptions, but on what is really happening hour by hour. This creates a foundation for more accurate capacity assessments, smarter investment decisions, and faster responses to operational events.

Real-time substation monitoring also makes it possible to detect overload conditions, power quality issues, and faults before they develop into service interruptions. At Embriq, we have seen this approach deliver tangible results for utilities in Norway and Sweden, and we believe it will be central to how future DSOs operate.

Flexibility: A Resource That Can Relieve Grid Constraints

One of the most promising tools for addressing capacity challenges is flexibility—the ability to activate consumers’ and producers’ willingness to shift, reduce, or increase consumption during specific periods.

Flexibility is not a new concept, but it is increasingly becoming a practical business reality. Utilities that can map what flexibility resources are available within their networks—which customers can contribute, when, and how—gain a powerful tool for postponing or avoiding grid investments and managing peak demand that would otherwise require costly infrastructure upgrades.

However, this requires sufficient visibility into network operations to identify, plan, and settle flexibility contributions effectively. Data and flexibility are two sides of the same coin.

Embriq’s Role in the Nordic and Danish Markets

Embriq is a Nordic SaaS company specializing in digital solutions for the energy industry. For more than a decade, we have worked closely with utilities in Norway and Sweden on many of the challenges now emerging in Denmark: capacity management, smart meter data utilization, substation monitoring, and analytics that support operational decision-making.

We are now active in the Danish market and aim to contribute to the broader Nordic dialogue on how distribution system operators can best navigate a rapidly evolving energy system. Our ambition is not to provide all the answers, but to bring Nordic experience into the conversation—and to learn from the solutions and approaches already being developed in Denmark.

If you work with these challenges in a Danish utility or within the Danish energy sector, we would be pleased to hear from you.
